A man from Surrey will seek accident claims compensation after crashing to the ground from 100ft above, in a faulty hotel lift. The incident occurred during a stag weekend with five friends and resulted in serious injuries and significant trauma. Stephen Dinsdale, a 44 year old IT analyst, was with friends at the Hotel Victoria in Newquay, Cornwall when the incident occurred. The lift, which travels through the Cornish cliff face to a cove below, fell 100ft, crashing into the concrete ground below. Now Mr Dinsdale, from Walton, Surrey, is to launch an accident compensation claim against the hotel and the manufacturers of the lift. The stag party were together within the lift when it ground to a halt. After being advised that the lift would be manually winched to the ground by staff of the hotel. Instead, however, the rescue mission was cut disastrously short as the lift fell 100ft to the sandy cove below, forcing the door of the lift to buckle on impact and trapping Mr Dinsdale and his friends inside. The incident occurred during high tide trapping the party and meaning that they were forced to endure a 45 minute wait to be rescued by lifeboats. Alarmingly, an investigation launched in the wake of the accident revealed that the lift had not been fully inspected for several years due to the presence of asbestos. Even so, less detailed inspections of the lift since that time had uncovered a number of defects and the lift had become stuck with passengers inside on several occasions. Following the horrific incident Mr Dinsdale risked losing his leg entirely and required ligament reconstructive surgery, as well as extensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The compensation claims settlement is being sought in order for Mr Dinsdale to receive the best rehabilitation and attempt to regain a normal life.
