Bhagalpur was famous as ‘Bhagdattpuram’ which meant ‘the City of Good luck’ as per the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharatha. It is most important city in southern Bihar and is one of the oldest districts situated on the fertile lands of the River Ganga. Many powerful kings have ruled this place. It was a big commercialized market in Eastern India even during the 7th century and was even visited by the popular Chinese travelers Fa-Hien and Hüan-tsang. It was also known as Champanagar during those times and it had a big harbor too.

As it is situated on the banks of the River Ganga, the crops grown here are maize, rice, wheat, oil seeds and barley and agriculture is one of the main incomes. There are also many good educational organizations here. The historical town of Bhagalpur is also renowned for the production of high quality silk. It is also known as the 'Silk City of India’. Weaving is the main occupation in Bhagalpur from many centuries and many generations have been involved in silk production. Bhagalpur is famous for its silk yarn manufacture, sericulture and weaving. The silk woven here is of a typical and unique type. It is known as Tussar or Tussah Silk.

Mandar Hills is nearly 50 km away from Bhagalpur and it is a sacred and mythological place. As per sacred, this Hill is considered to be where the ‘Sagar Manthan’ or the Churning of the ocean by the Devas and Asuras took place. The Hill was believed to be Lord Vishnu’s stay and that his footprints are there on the Hill. The marks of the Snake used as a rope during the Churning can still be seen on Mandar Hill. There is a lake on the peak and also many sculptures and rock cut statues that can be seen here.

Madhusudan Temple is a divine temple of Lord Vishnu located near Mandar Hill in a nearby town called Balisa Nagar or Bounsi tour package . There is also a Shiva Mandir and a Masjid located here which renders Hindu and Muslim harmony as the walls of the temple and mosque are common. Another place of interest is the Chandan Dam located near Bounsi and is a good source of water to the fields nearby.

Colganj temple is known for its rock cut sculptures and was constructed between the 5th to 7th centuries holiday packages . These carvings symbolize Hindu, Buddhist and Jain gods. Sultanganj is another crucial holy place for the Hindus. It is situated on the banks of the River Ganga, and is about 26 km away from Bhagalpur. Many deities visit here during the Shravana month to collect water from the Ganges and it is regarded as very sacred. The Burh Nath temple is popular for the Visharhi Asthan is where the famous Bihula or the Mansa puja, i.e. the worshiping of the snakes is held in July of every year trip packages .

The Bhagalpur has good road connectivity to many places in the state and can be easily reach the place using buses and taxis. Trains are also an important mode of transport. The closest airport is located at Patna and this is the best all round option. The Bhagalpur Junction is an old station and it is connected to many important cities in the state.
