April 16 2012, Encinitas, CA - Is your daughter getting the message that she is “just a girl”? A local author wants to change that with a book that will give young women and girls a sense of self worth, empowerment and independence. Leah Oviedo recently published a non-fiction book for young women and girls ages 13 and older. The title of the book says it all, “I Am More Than Just a Girl”. Playing off the stereotype that she heard growing up of being just a girl, she has created a book of resources, information, encouragement, self defense and creative exercises. The goal of the book is to allow young women to see a different way of thinking and have access to resources that are often not available. The book covers a variety of topics including women’s rights, individualism, stress management, community involvement, domestic violence and sexual assault. Also included are creative exercises meant to inspire, such as building an inspiration board, journal writing, and meditation. More than a self help book, there is also self defense section with basic moves and information on how to fight back. Leah describes the book as “Part of a larger project to encourage young women to be strong, independent and intelligent… I want to teach girls at a young age to feel empowered and keep informed of their own rights. With my book they will realize that circumstances such as economic situation, race, culture upbringing and prejudice do not control their destiny, but that they are in charge of their lives.” Leah is an artist and leads a youth group at the Center for Spiritual Living in Carlsbad. Her background and education includes work in domestic violence, sexual assault, foster youth and art. The book is self published and available as a soft cover and eBook.
