I am a Judgment Broker who writes about many things. With my day job, I communicate with many customers around the US. Like most businesses, not everyone that contacts us is "ready to buy", because the world has many window shoppers and tire kickers. Because our company involves private records, I need total security, and rock solid backup and data recovery, so I do not use PCs too often, and must use Macintoshes for judgment-related data, with a firewall. I've been using Provue's Panorama database on my Mac for around 27 years for all of my hobbies and businesses. Panorama is a big and powerful database that can do absolutely amazing things at incredible speeds. However, I found recently, that I have been filling in my Panorama judgment database file with lots of of old "dead" leads. Another problem is that when I document and research the hundred important things required to classify, validate, and characterize each judgment with my primary database, I do not want to interrupt what I am doing simply to document a new incoming lead telephone call. I decided that I needed another simple and free (or almost free) database to store leads, in case some of those people stop shopping, and chooses to benefit by selecting our company. I tried the database that comes with with OpenOffice, and found it too complex for my requirements. I did a web search for simple and free Macintosh databases, and discovered EagleData. EagleData is a simple and free, yet really flexible database that Mr. Bernd Frohlich (from Germany) wrote a long time for the Atari ST computer. Bernd then migrated his program to the Macintosh. Bernd's hobby is writing programs, and EagleData is one of them. The EagleData database is designed for simple uses, for example keeping addresses, music or CD or lead tracking, hobby collections, and any other organizational tasks that do not need a complex database. EagleData fits my needs perfectly as it is easy to figure out, fast, useful, and simple. In just seconds, I defined my fields. For my needs, I chose name, priority, email, phone, who referred the lead, and a large comments field. Now, when a potential customer emails or calls me with an inquiry (however not yet an order) I just click "add record", type my data in a few fields, and quit EagleData, and save my work. The data file EagleData saves is really compact, not much larger than the text you typed into the program. You may back up your database file by dragging it to a USB stick, or with any other method to back up. After a judgment lead becomes an order, I export the single database record to a text file, and then delete that one record as it has turned into an actual order. I use the exported text file to copy and paste my data into my main Panorama database. EagleData rocks because it is free and very simple to use.
