Heroes’ actress Hayden Panattiere spends her free time campaigning for the Save the Whales Again! program. Just recently, she went to Washington , D.C. and spoke for a DuPont Circle rally regarding their stand on prohibiting commercial whaling. Panettiere, an official spokeswoman for the project, remains active in the battle for the fair and humane treatment of whales. The protest is mainly against Japan , Norway and Iceland , where whale slaughtering is prominent. According to Panattiere, the animals are not only being cruelly slaughtered, the meat is also contaminated with huge amounts of mercury. Panattiere also attended a press conference with Congressman Nick Rahall, Chris Shays and Senator John Kerry, calling on the Bush Admin to take part in the International Whaling Commission. They are urging the government to make economic and diplomatic stand against the practices of the above-mentioned countries. Panattiere also lectured at Georgetown University and encouraged the youth to get involved. “Whales face increasing threats from climate change, ship strikes, entanglement in nets, and chemical and noise pollution, yet Japan , Norway and Iceland continue to kill them in increasing numbers,” she said. “I am here to talk with officials who actually make and carry out our policies, as well as fellow young people who will be voting in the upcoming election. Polls show that 59% of Americans would be more willing to vote for a candidate who takes a strong stand on whaling- I want our voice to be heard!” Panattiere is known to be active when it comes to marine issues. Last October 2007, she participated in a paddle-out ceremony to honor the spirits of the brutally killed aquatic animals. Joining Isabel Lucas, Peter Heller, Karina Petroni and couples Dave and Hannah Rastovich, she risked injury and arrest when the group tried to expose the dolphin-killing in Japan , where 25,000 dolphins were reportedly killed each year. They were allegedly harassed by local fishermen who were responsible for the killings. No less than 30 policemen also stopped them on their way home, questioning their intents and checking their passports. Another major story that hit the newsstands was when a warrant arrest was issued for Panattiere. This happened after she went to Japan and actually confronted the fishermen there.
