High end cameras can be intimidating, especially if your photography experience is limited to birthday parties and family gatherings. While good cameras have many functions designed to help you take great pictures, most people do not know how to use them. Many people do not even know that they exist. If you want to learn how to use your camera properly, you should consider taking one of the many photography courses available. Taking a course will teach you how to set up your camera, judge lighting conditions, line up great pictures and ultimately use your camera to its full extent. Most cities offer many different photography courses and the one you choose will depend on what you want to get out of it. The first thing you should consider is your camera. While traditional courses teach film photography and photo developing, many newer courses are focused on digital camerawork. If you already have a camera, you will have to take a course suitable to your tool. If you are in the market for a camera, however, you will want to choose both the camera, and the course, based on the style of photography you hope to take. Keep in mind that while some high end cameras still use film, most of the more affordable models are now digital. Another thing to consider when looking at photography courses is your skill level. A beginner's course will teach you basics such as how to use your flash and how to line up a shot. If you already know the basics and are looking for more advanced skills, however, you may want to go with an intermediate or expert class. The number of choices you have will depend on where you are taking your classes. If you are not sure what skill level to take, it is a good idea to give the teacher a call or look up a course outline on the internet. Most teachers will post a list of prerequisite skills on their websites to make your decision easier. Depending on where you are taking photography courses, you may be able to study more specialized subject matter. Some classes may develop special skills such as lighting, digital manipulation or dark room developing. Others may focus on a specific style of photography such as nature photography or portraiture. If you are interested in studying a particular area of photography, you may want to ask the school or teacher about upcoming course options. Most schools do not offer all of their courses at the same time and just because they are not offering your preferred course right now does not mean they will not offer it at a later date. In the end, the course you take may not matter as much as the fact that you are taking one in the first place. Photography courses of all types are a great way to become familiar with your camera and to get comfortable taking pictures. With a bit of effort and a little practice, you will be taking great pictures in no time.
