With the ever-increasing epidemic of heart disease, the growth of statin drugs and importance of cholesterol control has been stressed by cardiologists as well as other physicians across the world. It has been hypothesized that cholesterol control is not getting to the root problem of heart disease, but we do know that statin use and lowering of cholesterol after a diagnosis of heart disease tends to reduce mortality. One of the problems with statins is the nasty side effects in the form of muscle cramps or myopathies. What if there were a better drug out there? What if that better “drug” was actually a natural substance that lowered cholesterol just as well as statin drugs without the bad side effects? There is such a substance - it’s called berberine. Berberine is a plant alkaloid that is known to most as the active ingredient in goldenseal. It is commonly used for infections and diarrhea, but its effects have recently been noticed in the area of diabetes and heart disease. In a few studies, berberine was found to be just as potent as the prescription drug metformin at lowering blood sugar. Amazingly metformin is prescribed to just about every diabetic and berberine is mostly unknown. What’s more is berberine was also shown to lower cholesterol in a manner that is unlike statins at the same efficacy. So basically this means you will lower cholesterol but without the bad side effects. Now the real question will be whether berberine reduces mortality or not in regards to cardiovascular health. Lowering cholesterol is fine if you believe that high cholesterol causes heart disease (It’s complicated really), but what we want to see is actual better outcomes and not just improvement in markers. There was one study that showed a decrease in atherosclerosis after taking berberine. Atherosclerosis is the plaque that builds up in our arteries that eventually can clog and cause a heart attack. So the thinking right now is that if you use berberine, you will lower your cholesterol and you will reduce your plaque in your arteries. That’s about as close as you can get to knowing you will reduce heart disease without actually doing a study on mortality. Either way if you are looking for a natural way to lower your cholesterol or improve your blood sugar and you don’t want a prescription drug because of the side effects, thenberberine would probably be something you would want to try. Make sure when you look for products with berberine that you get one that has at least 500 mg per capsule and at least 97% pure. Also be sure to get a product that is made in the United States as there can be heavy metal contaminants in products from China - which many berberine products are made in China.
