The Truth About Macular Degeneration

Health
Macular degeneration is oftentimes the culprit for aging blindness, and it can be a terrifying experience. Let’s get a better understanding regarding the truth about this disease.

Have you ever heard of macular degeneration, or AMD? Perhaps a grandparent of yours slowly lost their ability to read - even with reading glasses in tow. Or, maybe you are experiencing mild vision-loss? This is probably all attributed to a disease called age-related macular degeneration (also known as AMD or ARMD). This disease can be extremely scary and chilling as it advances and slowly deteriorates the eye’s vision. Typically it occurs in the elderly and is caused by aging cells that slowly get worn down. Beyond affecting primarily just older patients, someone who never even needed glasses or had any vision problems in the past at all, is still susceptible to this terrible disease.

Macular degeneration targets the elderly population primarily because of the higher risk they are for their already deteriorating retinas. It occurs in an area in the retina called the macula, in which the cells within are affected. The macula is the part of your eye that manages and helps depict what you are seeing. AMD comes in two manifestations: wet (neovascular) or dry (non-neovascular). Dry AMD usually occurs in the beginning stages of wherever the disease originates. It is usually first recognized when yellow-ish spots of debris gather around the macula; this debris comes from weakened tissues. Dry AMD is the most common form of macular degeneration, affecting about eighty percent of all involved, whereas wet AMD is typically a bit more serious when it comes to vision loss. Roughly ten percent of those suffering from the dry form, progress into the neovascular form of AMD. Similar to the former, wet macular degenerative also deals with deteriorating tissues. This is very scary because with the new blood vessels come extra leaking fluid and blood which can then cause permanent damage to the central vision area specifically.

Usually the progression of age-related macular degeneration comes on gradually, and is seemingly painless. While that’s not very worrisome, the fact that AMD can cause haziness and blind spots in your central vision can be a bit scary. However, generally speaking, macular degeneration doesn’t actually cause one to go blind; it causes fuzziness and distorted vision; and these blind spots bring a haze on the clarity of your vision. It is possible to become completely blind with AMD if you are congruently suffering from additional eye conditions.

There are no distinct cures to age-related macular degeneration as of right now. However, certain nutrition enthusiasts insist that there are ways to slow the process down, and there are also some current treatments that can delay the disease’s growth, and possibly even enhance your vision. Some of these treatments are not FDA approved yet, although there a few approved drug treatments for wet AMD that aid in halting the growth of the abnormal blood vessels.

Macular degeneration can come at any time for the elderly, no matter the previous state of the patient. Whether or not your vision has already experienced problems beforehand, you could be at risk. Be sure to see a doctor immediately should you have any of the above symptoms. If you’re told that you need to buy glasses, always ensure that you stay on top of your latest prescriptions’ needs. One great place to invest in a new pair of specs is the Internet, believe it or not. So, in order to keep your eyes in check and not get any worse, get you next pair of eyeglasses online.

Hillary Glaser is a social networking specialist and expert in cross-media promotion, currently working on promoting prescription eyeglasses. She is the Director of Marketing and Special Projects for GlassesUSA.com - the easiest way to buy glasses online, which now offers free shipping on all US orders with the code FreeShip10.
