theban deity

Very slow start due entirely to AMON (20A: Chief Theban deity). He's Theban? Is he distinct from AMON-RA? And AMUN / AMUN-RA? So confusing. If you're gonna go traditional, go AGON-at least I determine what that means, as well as there's only one solution to spell it. Anyway, once I got going, things settled back off closer to normal Tuesday difficulty levels. Still, ended up being over 4-slow for my situation, for a Tuesday. The theme is slight, and will not quite work. First, when your SPEEDO is indeed FULL, well, which includes little to do with whether you are "chubby" and even more to do with other anatomical factors. Second, DIRTY ROTTEN EGG is not a phrase. DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDREL can be a phrase. Third, SNOWBALL IN HELLO only barely, super-tangentially, ultra-metaphorically, blends with its clue. NO LEGO TO STAND ON works OK, I guess. Overall, this won't have the smoothness and thematic exactness that I expect readily available constructors. The whole thing just feels slightly wobbly around.

Theme answers: 17A: Warning in terms of a chubby guy in many skimpy swimwear? (FULL SPEEDO AHEAD) 26A: No-good, awful frozen waffle? (DIRTY ROTTEN EGGO) 45A: Icy winter greeting? (SNOWBALL IN HELLO) 59A: Reaction to cleaning up some building toys? (NO LEGO To face ON) Three brand name-Os. One ... not. I misspelled WAHINES at the first try through, confusing these TAHINI sauce. Thought the clue on ASEA involved the hardest ASEA clue I'd seen (11D: Researching whales, say). Adjectival when it appears nominative. St. DENYS, IXION (27D: Zeus bound him for an eternally revolving wheel), and RINGO make an odd trio. You might be reading your site right now. Yoga is way a lot more than "meditation." It *can* be meditaTIVE ... but I can't stand the clue Ä°n any way (40A: Meditation with a mat). I do not think I've ever done WASH on a Monday. Whose "tradition" is always that? (10A: Do a traditional Monday chore) Appreciate the slangy clue on the slangy GAT (39A: Lead pumper, in old slang). BLOOPERS is the most popular word inside the grid (9D: Filmed bits that don't make it to the air). The clue is not really accurate, however, in the event of "The Carol Burnett Show," that's never quite as good as when the actors flubbed lines and created each other laugh.

Two mistakes to me: Had GAS for "lead pumper" and confused IBISES with IBEXES, so I left the E in when crosses changed others to IBESES. I guess birds do not have horns, do they? Except maybe the truly great Hornrd Owl, but those only are most often horns. Otherwise I had this blog in aboiut 13 minutes, a slower than average time for my situation.

I agree with you Rex, a ROTTEN EGG is not really necessarily DIRTY. It's meant to be, "Last one in is really a rotten egg.". I was some of the rotten egg being a kid, but I never felt DIRTY about it. I didn't know IXION, so I was especially anxious about leaving DIRTY, but DARTY made much less sense.
