As the name suggests, this snack is prepared from corn also know as maize, which when heated makes a popping sound, hence popcorn . In its uncooked form, it can be referred to as kernels. It was first discovered by Native Americans several centuries ago. Over the years since, many enjoy it throughout the world. It is popular in cinemas, sold to its customers as a quick snack to indulge in as they watch a movie, but it can also be made at home. There are several ways or methods of preparing this starchy food. Popular home-made methods include the stove top method where a heavy bottom pan with a lid is used, microwave method for prepackaged kernels in paper bags ready to cook, pressure cooker method which requires a great deal of care. There is also the large scale for commercial purpose preparation method which uses a hot air popper machine that requires no oil to cook. This snack also comes with different kinds of toppings, for those who prefer it that way. Caramel or toffee topping can be used to give the desired flavor and taste. Butter is used for the same purpose too. Also, coconut oil gives it that sweet smell as a snack made for commercial purpose. Away from it being used as a snack, it is used for decoration. The cooked corn is pieced together using a thread and used to decorate things such as trees during festive seasons including Christmas. It can also serve as a biodegradable packaging material in place of expanded polystyrene. It is not without its disadvantages though, such as the fact that it is flammable, it attracts pests, and its high cost amongst others. For those who like it, popcorn is an amazing snack. It is easy to prepare, cheap, and needs no side dishes or something to eat it with besides a glass of water or juice. Anyone can enjoy it, anywhere and at any time. It also comes packed with nutritional values such as high fiber. Something to note though, this snack is not advisable for kids under the age of four.
