Walking your dog is just part of the routine, it is a must for all dog owners. Not only does it provide the obvious but it socializes your dog, and provides exersice as well. Many of us walk our dog on a leash with a collar but few of us ever think what would happen if the collar slipped off. Maybe our loyal pet would stay right by our side but then again maybe not. What if an animal came out like a cat or another dog and he ran after it. What if a car drove by to fast, you just never know what will happen. We think that our dog is well trained and he will stay. But is what we think going to really happen. You may already have your dog micro chipped and it is a wise thing to do. Having a back up plan if your dog gets away is great thing. Micro chips are great but they only work if the shelter or vet that your dog is taken to has the right machine to view that chip and you never know if the person that finds your dog is going to take him in especially if he is missing his collar. They may just assume that he is a stray and keep him. I'm not saying not to get your dog micro chipped I highly recommend it but I also recommend something most of us never think about. Something so simple... a second collar, yup a second collar. This second collar can be an inexpensive collar nothing fancy just something to put a backup tag on. Then if he happens to slip off out of his collar whether on a walk or tied out in the yard he has all the information that he needs to be returned home safely. The simple fact is that with a collar on your pet is more likely to be pick up by a stranger to be returned. People like to do good, but they like things to be easy if your dog is micro chipped they have to bring him to the pound or the vet if he has a collar on they have all they need right there. They just have to make a call. They also feel more comfortable around the dog because they know his / her name and can call him / her by it.
