The Art of the Serve Receive in Volleyball

Sports,Education
The act of passing a volleyball from the serve to the setter in a consistent manner may be the most important aspect of volleyball. This is called the serve receive. The reason that this is so important because a volleyball team will never be able to run a good offense without it Below you will find the necessary requirements to be a great serve receiver.

Feet

As for every other skill in volleyball, you want to be in a ready position, aka the athletic position. Your feet are the most important part because they will set up the rest of your body. Keep your feet slightly staggered, with one a little ahead of the other.

Lower Body Position

If setting up your feet got you into the athletic position, then your knees should already be bent. You also want to keep your weight balanced over the balls of your feet.

Upper Body

Your upper body should be slightly bent forward. You want to be facing the server and set up to make a pass to your setter.

Hand Position

If you are right-handed, place your right hand fingers over your left hand fingers. Bring sides of palms together. Push your thumbs against each other, extend your arms out in front of your body, and raise the pits of your elbow up towards the ceiling. Raise wrists, press thumbs toward the floor.

When waiting for the serve, you do not want to have your hands grasped and ready to pass. The important part thing is that you move to where the ball is first then you get your hands together to make the pass.

The Platform

The platform is a word you will come across often in volleyball. The platform is where you will contact the ball on your arms while passing. If you can imagine that you have a piece of plywood extending from your biceps to your wrists, you should be able to maintain a very flat platform.

Passing the Ball

Remember that you want to have your body leaning slightly forward, bent at the waist. Contact the ball at the midpoint of your body from your solid "plywood" platform. Do not allow your platform to go above your eyes. You should never swing your arms. Instead of swinging your arms to pass, use your legs to guide the ball where you need it to go. Also, use your shoulders to help shape the pass. This means that you want to square your shoulders to the setter as you are contacting the ball. This will help you make a good pass.

Serve Receive Review

1. Do not forget about the athletic position. Keep your feet shoulder width apart and slightly staggered.

2. Maintain your body weight over the balls of your feet while your knees are bent.

3. Your body is slightly bent at the waist. Maintain a clear view of the server and face the server.

4. Remember your hand position but do nothing until you have moved your body to where the ball is going.

5. Maintain a solid platform by imagining that you have a piece of plywood running from your biceps to your wrists.

6. Pass the ball using your legs and shoulders. Avoid swinging your arms.
