A catamaran is a unique type of boat or ship that, instead of using one hull, uses multiple hulls- typically two. The word “catamaran” stems from the south-Indian word “kattamaram”. The boat consists of the two hulls, also called “vakas”, which are joined together by a central structure in the middle. In modern catamarans, this would be the deck of the ship. Catamarans have been used by Polynesian and Indian fishing communities dating back over 4,000 years, but they are relatively new to Western culture. When they were introduced, they were initially met with disdain and skepticism by Western sailors due to their foreign look and seemingly counter-intuitive design. Many sailors were familiar traditional single- or monohull designs that buoyed themselves by displacing water around them. The catamaran however balances on the water by use of geometry, rather than weight. Catamarans have proven to be exceptional sailing vessels and are prized for their speed, stability, and large capacity. It is these characteristics that have earned them top spots in ferrying positions, submarine rescue, and in touring boats. In fact, the title of the World’s Fastest Large Ferry belongs to a catamaran called the Stena HSS, capable of more than 70mph. A catamaran’s large deck, stretched across twin hulls, offers superior space for guests both to the bow (front) of the boat and amidships (the center of the boat). A Catamaran often houses a large enclosed main cabin that can serve as the command center and crew deck for nautical rescue missions, the main passenger decking area for ferries, or the lounge and food service area on a luxury tour boat. Catamarans have made great inroads into the party boat and tourism industries. Because of their stable nature, low-hanging bow (often covered with a secure, comfortable netting for passengers to lounge on), and plentiful interior space, catamarans represent the next generation of mainstream sailing boats.
