The Different Types of Links In SEO

Search Engines
When positioning your website for indexing by the search engines, as well as for an improved online visibility, the different types of links available can help greatly. The different types of links are used for different purposes. Some are used to generate rankings on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing while others are used to drive traffic directly from sites like Facebook and Twitter. Let’s take a closer look.

In-Bound Links

These are links placed on pages from external websites that link back to your site. These links can siphon traffic from those other websites they are placed on and send it to your website. If the links are volunteered freely by the linking site, and are based on merit, then they give the search engines a sign that your site is an authority in that particular niche. This leads to faster indexing and better ranking.

If you have a number of relevant and high quality in-bound links to your site, this also leads to a better PageRank by Google, which is the main search engine online. PageRank is often misunderstood to be a ranking indicator. It is not. It is a relevance indicator, but is still valuable.

Out-Bound Links

These are links that are placed on your website, linking it to some other external websites. Links leading away from your site may seem like a bad idea, but not necessarily. The point of your site should be to provide users with the best experience possible. Why? They’ll come back. Trust me, do you think Wikipedia suffers because it has links to other sites? Nope.

Out-bound links simply supplement your website's content. This is necessary because no one website can manage to provide all the needed resources to fully satisfy the visitor. Good use of these out-bound links also creates trust with your website visitors. They show that you are not selfish, and that you care for the visitor. Some search engine algorithms also treat out-bound links that point towards other authority sites as a sign of relevance, leading to better page ranking. If you have a tax site, building links to forms on the IRS website is a no brainer.

Care should be taken, however, to avoid linking to sites that will work against yours in terms of ranking, authority and competition. Linking to a link farm, for example, will lead to penalization of your website by the search engines, so be careful.

Inter-Site Links

Sometimes referred to as intra-page links, inter-page links connect the different pages of your website together providing a seamless transition from one page to the other. They help to ease the navigation around your site. An easily navigable site will retain a visitor longer, which keep them on the site. The longer they are on the site, the more likely they are to buy something!

The SEO value of each of these links varies greatly from site to site, depending on a number of factors. Some sites will get more value from in-bound links, while others will benefit more from out-bound links. There are also many other more specific types of links that can be used for SEO purposes. However, these are the general categories of the different types of links in SEO that one can have for their website.
