The tallit is a traditional Jewish prayer shawl traditionally worn by men during prayers. However, today the tallit for women is steadily gaining acceptance. The significance of the tallit goes far back in history to when, in Numbers 15:38 and Deuteronomy 22:12, Jews were commanded to wear a special garment with four woven fringes. The fringes themselves are made to a specific formula that, according to the Sages reminds the wearer of the laws and commandments associated with Judaism. In Hebrew, each letter is also a numeral. The numerical value of the Hebrew word for fringes is 600. Each of the four fringes is tied using 8 threads and 5 knots. Together, this makes 613 which are the number of commandments by which each Jew is expected to live their lives. The tallit for women in history Until recently, it was generally accepted that the tallit be worn only by the male Jew. In the past this was not always so and whilst there was and is a definite obligation for the man to wear the tallit after his Bar Mitzvah, no such obligation exists for the woman. At the same time, historically, there is no specific ruling forbidding women from wearing this highly spiritual garment. In fact, early rabbinical and influential scholars such as Rashi (1040–1105) and Rambam (1135–1204), did permit women to wear a tallit. The tallit for women symbolizes a new relationship with Judaism In today's modern Judaism, the tallit for women is now an accepted in many synagogues. Modern Judaism recognizes that the role of the woman is no less important to our faith than that of the man. The wearing of the tallit by female members of the congregation symbolizes the unity of the Jewish people and the fact that Judaism is a developing and changing religion, one that can, and indeed must, adapt to modern society.
The tallit as a symbol of Jewish rebirth Jewish art has undergone a renaissance, a rebirth as we rediscover our faith, our heritage and our roots. The significance and importance of the tallit for women has encouraged Jewish designers and artists to create unique tallitot specifically for women. Made in accordance with ancient tradition, using pure silk and delicate silk print techniques each tallit for women is a unique work of art designed and created by the artist to bring the wearer closer to God.
