The tourists gaze is paying increasing attention to Azerbaijan. Baku gets the bulk of visitors and indeed the city has much to offer. However, the remainder of the country remains largely unexplored. This means there are excellent opportunities for the intrepid traveler to visit places still untrammeled by the crowds. If you are in Baku, why not stretch your legs and explore? This is, afterall, a country made famous by the Silk Road. It would be shame to not take to this road. If you go to one place other than Baku, it should be the small city of Sheki, tucked into the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains 380 kilometers to the West of the Caspian Sea. Sheki possesses all the characteristics that makes travelling rewarding. The town is steeped in Islamic and Silk Road history and can provide delicious food and hospitality for those who go out of their way for a visit. Sheki is one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus, having been first inhabited 2,700 years ago. The town is famous as a centre of silkworm-breeding and it was an important stop along the Silk Road. More recently, it hosted the Soviet Union’s largest silk plant. Today silk production has retreated back into small workshops, but this has benefited the craft and restored artistry that was not possible in large scale production. The town’s most important attraction is the Royal Palace of Sheki Khans, which was built in 1762 as a summer palace. Constructed without a single nail, it is a splendid example of Islamic architecture and features frescos and stained glass work that are as fine as any in the world. Sheki can be reached by train or bus from Baku. If you are looking for a hotel Baku has many options and this is where almost all arranged Silk Road tours begin, so you best settle in and enjoy the sites. A Baku hotel is an excellent place to start any journey in Azerbaijan, as the city has much to see. It has provided many good beginnings for Silk Road journeys.
