BEAUTY IS NOT OPTIONAL Women buy beauty products that work for them, even on a tight budget. During a recent interview with an Avon beauty products representative, it was asked if she had observed a decline in sales because of the nationwide economic downturn. She replied, “Oh, no! Business is booming! Honey, for American women, beauty is not optional.” Apparently, women seeking to look their best drive job security for the beauty business from the Californian plastic surgeon to the Georgia beauty school graduate. WORD OF WARNING However, a market attempting to keep up with rising demands for new lotions and potions, shampoo and perfume, should also expect to face rising issues with customer adverse reactions. Wise women who have noted a past reaction to a cosmetic or other beauty product will carefully read the label for ingredients before making a purchase. Luckily, she usually has a plethora of manufacturer lines from which to choose in order to get the same product without irritating ingredients. NOT JUST SKIN DEEP Unfortunately, reactions to cosmetics may be more than skin deep. Most frequently, adverse reactions include a localized rash or minor swelling. But preliminary information from a recent study performed at George Washington University suggests that gluten, a protein found in grains, and now found in some lotions, may actually worsen intestinal symptoms in customers suffering from celiac disease. NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION The researchers also noted in their study that the lists of ingredients on the cosmetic products, when available, often did not include gluten. Therefore, even a careful consumer may purchase the product and suffer reactions. The overarching advice to women who achieve beauty from a surgeon in California or a small beauty school in Georgia is this: stay informed regarding new information, and stay observant to how you respond to each product.
