Having access to a geophysical instrument has always been important for mining. Extraction of resources and minerals from the earth often requires the use of technology and sophisticated geophysical equipment. Modern advances in software have accelerated the use of these tools and mining has made great advances since the earlier part of the twentieth century. Exploration has been around for many decades, but it increased markedly after the 1930s. War time research during the Second World War helped facilitate the growth of the field, first by the government and then by private companies that followed suit. Prior to that period, surveying and mining methods were often primitive, at least compared to contemporary standards. Starting in the 1930s, various ground based instruments became commercially available to mining operations, including equipment that tested for seismic activity, radioactivity and electromagnetic fields. Some of this research was used to help prevent underground explosions or other disasters. Other research was used simply to increase efficiency and to locate ideal places in which to drill or mine. Magnetometers, Seismographs, Geiger Counters and Gravimeters have all been equipment that mining firms have had to employ at one time or another. More recent developments like ground penetrating radar have also been useful. Ground penetrating radar did not become commercially available until around the 1970s. Since then both government agencies and private industries have used the radar to improve the safety and efficiency of mining operations throughout the country. Currently, modern software applications have made even greater advances in promoting safe and profitable mining by effectively using modern instruments. Software has made detecting problems much simpler. Operating the right software and geophysical instrument can help make a mining operation function more safely and more smoothly. Recent advances have helped advance the field of mining with the use of the right geological tools. Advanced Geosciences.
