Of course, different people have varying tolerance to cold temperatures. Some can shrug it off as they wear shorts and T-shirts into December. Others are bundling up at the least hint of coolness in the air. On the serious side, hypothermia is nothing to mess with. While frost bite seems mild, you can lose a limb or your life because of it. So as the thermometer continues to decline and the days grow ever shorter, it would be a good idea to follow these tips on staying warm on the family boat. -- With the temperatures dipping below 70 degrees, all you should need is a light jacket with jeans and a T-shirt. -- With the temperature dipping below 60 degrees, add a hoodie and thick socks. -- With the temperature dipping below 50 degrees, it’s time to add in a heavy coat and scarf. -- With the temperature dipping below 40 degrees, it’s time to think about buying a wetsuit. Usually you can find a full-length wet suit starting at about $80. -- With the temperature dipping below 30 degrees, it’s time to find another family because your family just mutinied. -- No matter what you wear, make sure you have a change of clothes available, packed into a well-sealed plastic container. Especially during the fall and winter, the wind will suddenly pick up and you’ll have waves spraying you from every which way. -- Last, but certainly not lease, you should have foul weather gear on your boat. A good rain poncho could at least keep you from getting wet and cold. Just remember that cold temperatures are nothing to scoff at.
