When you’re ready to buy an engagement ring, you’ll hear all about the 4 c’s, about platinum, gold, and white gold, and about creating a memorable proposal. The first thing you need to think about, however, is what shape of diamond your girlfriend/soon to be wife wants. Well, first you should be sure you want to marry her, but SECOND you should think about the shape of the diamond. In a recent survey, over 80% of woman said that the s about the shape of the stone in the ring was very important in making them happy. It makes sense: If a woman is going to look at a rock on her finger for the next 50 years, she probably should like the shape of it! You may have heard about ‘cut’ when you heard about the 4 c’s of buying a diamond, but the shape is different. The cut has to do with how the diamond is actually carved, while shape is simply the shape of the stone, in one of about 2 dozen patterns. Here are the different shapes of diamonds (at least these are the most popular, you can always find other unique stones, but your girlfriend probably wants one of these). Also, remember to always get a GIA or AGS certification when you purchase a stone, so that you actually have 3rd party verification of what you’re buying. • Round • Oval • Emerald • Curved Trilliant • Radiant • Asscher • Princess • Straight Trilliant • Heart • Pear • Box Radiant • Marquise • Baguette Any of those shapes are a good choice, but some are much more popular than others. For example, princess and round diamonds make up over 75% of diamonds purchased. They’re the most popular for a reason: Girls like them! If you get an antique engagement band, you’ll likely want to stay traditional with a nice round diamond. However, some more modern rings are specifically shaped to house the more unique shapes of diamonds, like Marquise or Pear diamonds, and that leads to a very unique ring that will stand out from the rings on her friend’s fingers. It really all depends on what she likes, so you need to find out! Whether you ask her directly, or get a friend/sister/relative to do it, make sure you know what shape she wants prior to buying her this symbol of your commitment. If you don’t know, and can’t find out what she wants, stick with round or princess, and you probably won’t go wrong. Interested in learning more when you're ready to buy an engagement ring?
