As soon as Susan turned 18, she decided to take some correspondence courses and get her high school diploma online. She had not really wanted to drop out of high school, but circumstances had forced her to do that. She had been living with her Dad and her stepmother in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It seemed like all they did was fight, and her stepmother had other serious problems. She was addicted to all kinds of prescription pain killers. By the end of the day, it was impossible to speak with her. She slurred her words, and if anyone even mentioned it, she would deny that anything was wrong. She would claim that she was just tired. Susan hated it. Her dad hated it too and therefore, he left them. He got an apartment in town and because he had a new girlfriend staying with him, he told Susan that she couldn’t live there as well. Susan had no one to turn to. She was forced to stay with prescription addicted stepmother. After a while, she could not handle it anymore, epically since sometimes her stepmother was mean, very mean. Susan then decided to run away. She ran to her stepmother's younger sister's house in Rapid City, South Dakota, but she did not tell anyone that she was there. Her step-aunt was very nice to her, and she said that Susan could stay as long as she needed. Unfortunately, Susan couldn’t enroll in high school without parental consent or a birth certificate. She was seventeen and a half, and there was no point in trying to emancipate herself from her father and stepmother. The process would take so long that it would barely be started by the time she was ready to turn eighteen. The only thing that Susan could do was to wait. She helped her step-aunt around the house, she did some babysitting for extra cash, and she waited until she was eighteen. The day she turned eighteen, she was so happy. Unlike many of her peers, she was not excited because she could finally buy cigarettes, she was excited because she could start to work on her high school diploma. She decided to pursue her high school diploma online. She signed up for all of the correspondence courses that she needed, and she started to study. She was able to complete all of her correspondence courses in only a few months. She received her high school diploma online only three months after she would have normally finished high school, if she had been allowed to enroll. When it was all over, she called her dad and told him where she was. He had broken up with his girlfriend, and he had finally realized how horribly he had missed her. He asked Susan to forgive him. She agreed, and she decided to move back in with him while she attended a college in Aberdeen. Eventually, she graduated from college and became more successful than she had ever imagined that she would.
