Beijing, China is home to the world’s largest airport, longest bridge, and as of 2008, also the worlds largest LED curtain . Visitors who attended the summer Olympics in Beijing were able to get a glimpse of the GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall. It is the worlds largest color LED display combined with China’s first photovoltaic system to be integrated into a glass curtain wall. It is located on the wall of the Xicui entertainment complex, near the site where the Olympics were held. It was designed by the New York based architect, Simone Giostra. A Chinese company called Suntech, provided the solar technology that forms the LED curtain. Suntech developed the first glass solar panels ever, and these panels make up this remarkable piece of technological art. Besides the amazing visuals this LED curtain brings, it is also environmentally friendly. It harvests solar energy by day and uses it to light up the screen at night. The display is made up of 2,292 color LED lights. It is comparable to a 24,000 square foot monitor. Unlike other typical high-resolution screens that cover Beijing’s city with ads, news, and other animations, this unique screen will keep a low resolution, only displaying arty abstract visuals. It is the first venue dedicated to digital media art. It is used to display the work of emerging artists. A diverse team of art institutions, galleries, media schools, corporations, collectors and benefactors will organize different installations, videos, and performances. Whether you are a permanent resident of Beijing, or just a world traveler who is lucky enough to visit that wonderful place, you should definitely put the GreenPix Zero Energy Media Wall on your list of places to see.
