Is your teenager falling behind in school, does she have a short attention span, or have difficulty reading or writing? If so, he may be more than just a “lazy kid,” he might have a learning disability. Here are a few warning signs of learning disabilities: • Problems with memory. • Difficulty with following directions. • Cannot organize things or put things in a sequence (this hampers the ability to learn math.) • Difficulty with processing sensory information, can get sensory over-load very easily. • Inappropriate responses to many situations, often anger. • Improper or immature speech. • Problems with telling time, and knowing right from left. • Doesn’t do well with change. • Has issues with communicating, says one thing, but often means something else. If any of these things seem like issues your teenager is dealing with, ask his school counselor for help. Once diagnosed, there are many ways to help her feel less frustrated, and tools which she can be given to help her learn more effectively. If not addressed, learning disabilities can lead to a higher rate of high school drop outs, substance abuse, and even criminal behavior. Is there hope for someone with a learning disability to go to college and get a good job? Yes, there is. There are specialized colleges for learning disabilities , even colleges specifically for ADHD students. There, your son or daughter will learn even more specific skills to help him cope with, and even excel in, the workplace. Don’t be afraid to get your teenager help. Having a learning disability has much less stigma surrounding it then it used to. It also doesn’t mean he is stupid or below average, it just means that he needs different tools to accomplish certain tasks. Don’t let her fall through the cracks in school, and go through life thinking she is somehow less than others.
