The churches of Alicante represent cultural landmarks for not only the city but that of the whole country. All this is reason enough to visit these churches on your holiday. Below are a few churches that represent what we have been talking about and are highly recommended to be put on your list of places to visit. The first church we are going to take a look at is Saint Mary's which is a very solid and imposing structure being the oldest church in Alicante. This church, like a lot of them in Spain, was built on top of the ruins of a Moorish mosque with construction starting in the 14th century and continuing into the 16th century. When the church was originally built they used Gothic style architecture in its construction but at a later date the church underwent a remodelling program at which time they changed the style of architecture to include Rococo and Baroque influences. You have to see not only the outside of this beautiful church but the interior will surprise you as well with its 15th century Gothic sculpture, a 17th century Baroque organ and a 16th century white marble font. The centre of Alicante’s Old Town is home to the most important church in the city, the San Nicolas Concatedral. Like Saint Mary's, the San Nicolas Concatedral was built on top of a Moorish mosque starting in 1616 and was not completed until 1662. The interior of this church is richly decorated in a rather large extensive area but you wouldn't know that from the modest exterior in its Baroque style. Situated in the Santa Cruz Barrio is the ever so small Santa Cruz Chapel, which is one of the more important attractions in Alicante. This small chapel was constructed in the 18th century in the medieval section of town with its narrow winding streets making it a perfect place to build this little building. To give you some idea of its importance, the famous Easter procession starts from this point each year. To finish off your stay in the VILLAS IN ALICANTE, stop by the Saint Rocco Chapel named after the saint who the church was built to honour. This church, named after the co-patron of Alicante, dates as far back as the 16th century and due to its beauty it is a must see while you are here.
