When booking your VILLAS IN ALICANTE you have chosen the second largest town in the Valencian province. This is one of the most important ports along this part of the Mediterranean that is inundated with culture and heritage. In the early part of the 20th century this area struggled to find an economic footing but in the latter part of this century there has been a massive transformation moving the economic base to tourism. This tourism based economy extends to most parts of the labour market giving Alicante a great source of employment. Even the port of Alicante has gained a place of importance as one of the most critical ports in Spain for cruise ships. Alicante is well placed for its transportation system with one of the busiest airports in Spain located only eight kilometres from town centre. There are also scheduled train and bus services from Alicante to just about anywhere in Spain. With the advent of budget airlines the airport is a Mecca for those wishing to holiday on the Costa Blanca. If you are arriving by car the road system is nothing short of fantastic for serving the area. There are a number of interesting places to visit but none more so than the Santa Barbara Castle setting on top of Mount Benacantil overlooking Alicante's skyline. This castle is considered to be the landmark of this ancient city by the sea. The construction of this castle began in the 10th century by the Moors and functioned as a fortress for centuries. Today the castle provides a good platform for viewing the surrounding area and the view from the lookout tower are even better. If you are up for an evening stroll venture over to the Explanada de Espana promenade lined with palm trees and a walkway made from over six million marble stones. This is not only a good place for a stroll but the shopping in this area is nothing short of fantastic. If you are meeting someone this is the most preferred location in all of Alicante. If you happen to be here on a summers evening don't be surprised to hear live music being played or artist drawing sketches of tourist. For a good example of Valencia architecture, visit the Catedral de San Nicolas de Bari which was built in the seventeenth century. For a different style of architecture take a look at the Basilica of Santa Maria built in the Gothic style on top of an old mosque. If you are interested in the Baroque style explore the Casa de la Asegurada which is the oldest civil building in Alicante. This is now home to the Museum of Contemporary Arts of Alicante. Another stop on your historic tour of Alicante is the Huerta de Alicante Towers. It was originally constructed in the seventeenth century to warn the local populist of an impending raid by the Barbary Pirates. When arriving at your VILLAS IN ALICANTE you will notice an abundance of lovely parks where you can while the day away doing nothing. The most popular park in Alicante is El Palmeral Park especially with its walking trails, lakes, playgrounds and picnic facilities plus a lot more. If you make it over to Mount Benacantil, take a stroll through the El Ereta Park.
