The number of exercise bikes to choose from has grown over the years with new technology. No longer is just the simple stationary bike with just handles, a wheel and pedals the only option. Now available are multiple levels of computerized bicycles that can track all kinds of information. Technology does come with a price however. Consumers have to choose the machine that will best help them to be motivated to do the work. A plain old outdoor bicycle can be easily made into a stationary bike. This basic fitness unit can be created with a simple kit or anything that will lift the rear tire off ground. Very little expense is required. The rear wheel can then spin freely without the bike moving. A bike with a number of gears can create different levels of resistance allowing a rider to increase or decrease the difficulty involved in pedaling. Another option is a simple stationary bike made for that job. These include a speedometer, odometer for tracking miles ridden and a way to adjust resistance. The resistance is usually controlled by twisting a knob on these basic machines. This increases pressure on the belt or wheel. The basic types of stationary bikes have the plus of being inexpensive. They do not provide the variety of tracking and information provided by the new computerized units. These basic models are now becoming obsolete and harder to find. Small lighted digital screens provide the information to the rider. Resistance adjustments are accomplished simply by pressing buttons. Other possible information such as burned calories may be available. These units are usually powered by electricity generated by the rider. Displays light up only after pedaling commences. The most expensive models have computer generated programs designed for exercise efficiency. There are programs designed with resistance variations for different levels of fitness. These can be set for any length of time. Mountains, hills and sprints are options. The handles of these models include pulse monitors in the handles. These machines have to be connected to an electrical source to retain information between uses. Modern exercise bikes provide significantly more information. They can recall multiple rider's health, workout histories and personal preferences. The choices are extensive and technology may help with the motivation to get on the bike and work out.
