If you’re into making music utilizing your computer you already know how significant it can be to have an excellent MIDI keyboard. There are many products and brands to choose from. Prices and features are the 2 most common factors that affect a buyer’s buying decision. Before getting your own personal MIDI keyboard, how big do you really need it to be? That is to say, how many keys would you like your keyboard to have? There are a number of keys for sale that also determines the size - 88, 76, 61, 49, 37, or 25. The most recommended by experts and users is the 49. It’s an intermediate size which can give you the selection you need but without so much complex features. It’s also small enough so that space and storage doesn't have to be a dilemma. Next question to ask yourself is, what will you use it for? If you’re simply doing it as a hobby or you only intend to do small range compositions then maybe a smaller size unit would be the choice for you. It is ideal if you intend to travel with it since it is not too bulky. But if you are in for a full blown composition then perhaps a full 88 is a better choice. In some cases though, musicians who do full composition still wind up utilizing a MIDI keyboard with lesser keys. For as long as you have the appropriate knobs and sliders to give you a variety of “effects” plus a good software, then you should be A-ok. After all it’s all moot and academic if you can’t get pass the next factor. Space can also be a concern. Think about the measurements your “studio” and whether you will have space to fit a full 88 in between the computer and your keyboard. Just to be sure, measure the exact spot you have available and then make your own preference using that. You may choose a full 88 but let’s be realistic - if it can’t fit then it’s nearly useless. This is also true in case you have other music gadgets contending for the same space. Cost is also a factor but the valuable thing is MIDI keyboards are a good deal cheaper than say a digital piano or electronic piano. Whatever you decide on as long as you’re able to get the best outputs out of it then you can be certain that you made the right decision. Check out useful tips in buying Midi Keyboards.
