House fires happen every day and often claim lives. That's why it's so important for families to practice fire safety in the home and to have the right equipment so that if a fire starts, it can be put out quickly before it spreads. There are two tools that are essential in helping families put out fires before they become deadly: smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in NJ. Smoke detectors are required in every home by law. But a smoke detector won't do you any good if it has dead batteries. Changing the batteries in your smoke detectors regularly is something you should never put off for another day. A fire can spread in the blink of an eye. That's why it's important to have extinguishers on every level in the home in an easy to access spot. The kitchen is one of the most important locations for this essential life-saving tool. One third of all residential fires start in the kitchen. Children should be taught how to correctly use a fire extinguisher as well. Teach them PASS. PASS is an acronym that stands for the correct way to use these helpful tools. You start by pulling the pin to allow the extinguisher to discharge and then aiming at the base of the fire. You want to hit the fuel of the fire, not the flames. Next, squeeze the top handle of the lever and sweep from side to side until the fire is completely out. That's pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep. No household should be without these important tools. About The Author: Metro Fire & Safety Equipment Company, Inc. has helped homeowners and businesses with all types of fire and safety equipment.
