Back in the good old days our ancestors never had to worry about things like electricity, light bulbs, or UPS and generator service. On the other hand back in the good old days our ancestors were lucky if they lived to the old age of 40. 150 years ago many people’s pioneer ancestors froze to death crossing the great plains of America. At this point no one had even been able to harness electricity enough to successfully send a telegraph message. Clearly there have been many technological advances in the past 150 years. One of the obvious changes between how people lived back then and how we live now is that we depend upon electricity to help us get through our every day lives. While our ancestors were depending on finding enough buffalo chips to fuel their fires when they circled up their wagons in the evening, we can just plug in an electric blanket and be assured a nice comfortable night’s sleep. For the most part even the medical advances that we’ve had have been greatly influenced by the widespread availability of electricity. Think about your last visit to a doctor’s office or hospital. How was that experience influenced by electricity? Can you imagine the devastation that would occur if your local hospital were to completely lose power for even a short amount of time? It’s unarguably true that electricity has become an essential part of our way of life. Thank goodness that we do have UPS and generator service when our regular utility power supply fails. Is it any surprise that with such dependable technological help we have been able to double our life expectancies over the past 150 years?
