There are many choices when it comes to colleges. Students with learning disabilities may feel that their chances for success beyond high school are limited. Finding colleges for learning disabilities can open a new world of possibilities for them. Yet they may wonder why they should attend a college for learning disability rather than a traditional mainstream college. First, a student finds success when surrounded by others who share a common link with them, in this instance others who share a learning disability, such as ADHD. Feeling empathy from one’s peers and giving empathy helps reinforce the knowledge that their struggles are real and that they are not alone. Second, attending a college that exclusively serves those with learning disabilities provides further educational opportunities that the student may have never envisioned as possible for themselves. Third, the student at this college experiences personal attention that allows them to realize their full potential. A college for ADHD students highlights their strengths and develops mastery of weaknesses. This is accomplished through programs such as seminars, college readiness, skill development and individual mentoring. Fourth, this type of college helps students with learning disabilities to find their niche by instilling in them a belief that they can create a promising future for themselves. Fifth, after schooling is completed there is life to be lived. This type of school helps to give students the tools they need to succeed beyond graduation. Help is available from faculty and staff through assistive technology. Assistive technology helps students to learn about their disability and discover ways to work with and around the disability to maximize success. These tools help the student to transition from school to a post-graduation world. Beacon College is a college for ADHD students, accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelor and Associate of Arts degrees.
