A furnace is an important necessity during the wintertime when temperatures drop. When it starts to get cold, most of us simply flip our thermostat settings over from air conditioning to heating. Most of the time this works without a hiccup, but every so often the furnace fails to function as it should. Here are a few signs that may indicate your furnace needs servicing from a heating and air conditioning professional. One problem that may occur when you turn on your furnace is excessive noise. Listen particularly for shrieking noises coming from the unit. If you experience these shrill sounds when you turn on your furnace, it may be a sign that there is a problem with the belt that connects the blower cage to the motor. Accompanying this noise will a lack of warmth from your vents. Another sign that your furnace needs servicing is a high utility bill. If you open your gas bill only to discover unusually high costs unrelated to service cost hikes, it might be a sign that your furnace is working twice as hard to do its job. This can be caused by several problems. If you never change your furnace filter then your furnace is working extra hard to try and draw in clean air. Blocked ducts can also be a factor that is causing problems. Another sign is when your thermostat fails to trigger the furnace even though the temperature in the house is below your set temperature. This could be a result of dirty sensors. If you experience any of these problems, call in a repairman.
