Drips, leaks, and plugs are three of the most common plumbing problems that homeowners have to deal with on a consistent basis. A plumbing problem can be a huge inconvenience that may require expensive repairs. However, before you call out the professionals, there are a few home remedies that you can try to fix the problem on your own. If your problem is a dripping faucet, you can probably do the repair on your own. Dripping faucets are a problem on several levels. Not only are they annoying but they can also waste precious water. If the drip becomes severe enough, it can lead to flooding. The cause of the problem is often the gasket. You can replace this easily. Start by turning off the water supply to your sink. In a kitchen this is usually under the sink. In a bathroom it may be by the toilet. Loosen and remove the head of the faucet. Now look at the inside of the faucet head and remove the gasket. It looks like a flattened rubber o-ring. Clean the faucet head and remove any grit or grime. Purchase a new gasket at your hardware store. Make sure to take the old one with you for comparison. Replace the old gasket with the new one and make sure there is no buckling and it fits snugly. Now screw the faucet head back on, taking care not to let the gasket get caught in the grooves. Tighten with a crescent wrench. Now turn the water supply back on and turn the faucet on for 30 seconds. Look for any dripping. If that doesn't fix it, call in a plumber.
