The Importance of Vision in the Working World

Health
Sometimes, choosing a profession has more to do with your physical abilities and less to do with your own wants and needs. Eyesight is a huge component to consider when wanting to enter certain working arenas.

When choosing ones career path, one usually follows the thought pattern of “would I be able to do that for the rest of my working life?”; “does that interest me enough?”; and sometimes even, “would I want to be doing that work when I become a parent?”; “do I really want to spend my life traveling?” Rarely however, do people stop to think: will my level of eyesight be enough for this career? And if it deteriorates over time, how will this adversely affect my chosen professional path?

The truth is that professions requiring perfect 20/20 vision are few and far between; especially because today, eyeglasses and contact lenses work to bring out sight back to perfection level, enabling us to carry out daily tasks without a problem. However, in a few cases, this is not the case, and without knowing the facts before, those choosing careers can be left feeling disappointed and dejected.

Pilots, for example, will not even be accepted into flight school without perfect 20/20 vision. In this specific profession, anything less than perfect sight will have you out of a job within minutes. Why when pilots could easily wear glasses or contact lenses? Because people’s lives fall into the hands of such people and nobody will risk the possibility that the pilot’s glasses will break, or contact lens will fall out while in flight, or even before take-off.

In the case of jobs involving life and death decisions, perfect vision is another must. Firefighters, emergency service providers, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, lifeguards, and medical professionals run the risk of causing grave danger to themselves and others if they misjudge a situation because of a vision problem. What’s more, this can land them in heavy legal mayhem and work counter to their need to save and protect life. Just think of what would happen if a firefighter thinks that he sees someone in a burning building and risks his life to go in and save them; or if a policeman mistakes the victim for the thief?

In some cases, perfect vision is not required and glasses or contact lenses would be fine however, imperfect vision may be a hindrance to your work, maybe the job much harder for you and putting a great deal of strain on your eyes. Such jobs include that of watchmakers and jewelers, those who put together machinery and/or though who build the parts that make up a computer - just to name a few.

Doctors, especially surgeons, also need to ensure to keep a special check on their eyes - both regarding their level of sight and their general eye health. Can you imagine a doctor going into surgery with anything less than perfect vision? Would you want a dermatologist to take a look at your skin if she cannot actually see clearly? We put our lives in the hands of our health care professionals and as such, they need to be able to treat us without any visual hindrances.

There are obviously a wealth of professions, each with their own needs and requirements. Someone wanting to enter the working world should do their homework and carefully look into each desired profession and develop an intimate understanding of whether they would be able to carry out the job, and what would happen if, down the line, their eyesight worsened.

Aside from this, every job hunter should check whether he/she has a visual impairment or eye disease by way of a thorough eye examination. At the start of this examination he/she should ask their doctor to fill out his/her eyeglasses prescription with every necessary detail concerning his/her vision and his/her visual ability. Should they need help to correct a visual problem, they should immediately buy glasses according to the specifications given by their doctor in order to be sure that they will be working at an optimal optical level.

Hillary Glaser is a social networking specialist and expert in cross-media promotion, currently working on promoting prescription eyeglasses. She is the Director of Marketing and Special Projects for GlassesUSA.com - the easiest way to buy glasses online, which now offers free shipping on all US orders with the code FreeShip10.
