ISBN 978-0-615-29134-5. $42.50/$50.00. Nuevo M?xico: An Anthology of History, organized by Roberto Mondragon and Georgia Roybal, is a quasi-Rosetta Stone for understanding the state and its people. The first New Mexico history textbook written by New Mexicans, it takes a nonlinear approach to describing the state's development, traditions and legacy from the geological eras two billion years ago to contemporary life. Unlike traditional history books written by one author rendering a chronology of events, this book is written by a diverse group of New Mexicans. They develop the context for life in New Mexico by looking at separate domains, such as languages, beliefs, conflicts, technology and commerce ("livelihoods"), and the role of government. Perhaps the greatest strength of the book is that it conveys the primacy of relationships between people and nature (land and water) in New Mexico, serving as the basis for tradition, culture and commerce. With its eight parts and 38 chapters, the book explains how the history, language, tradition and culture form the ties that bind the people to one another and to the state. References and resources complete the tome for those interested in learning more and researching primary sources. As a Latina who has lived in many places with different Latino groups, I struggled to explain to others how and why things were different in New Mexico. Whether it was the way I spoke heritage Spanish, the traditions I kept or my expressed love of home, I remained a proud "munita" wondering why the Christian Louboutin Boots Latino experience in New Mexico was unique. Now I know. For example, I often wondered why Catholics were steeped in Church history, the saints and dogma, but were seldom encouraged to be Biblical scholars. Now I know. I wondered how the Spanish spoken in northern New Mexico had survived as a hybrid of an antiquated form and Spanglish. Now I know. I searched for ways to simply explain - not defend - life as it is in the Land of Enchantment. Now I can. The book's sections on the role of government and "livelihoods" in New Mexico were particularly interesting because they explained the evolution of governance and the role that it has played in the history, science, commerce, industry and the economy of the state. Since my father spent his entire adult working life at Los Alamos National Laboratory, I knew of its origins and its importance to my family and the area, but reading it in Nuevo M?xico reinforced the larger picture of the contributions it - and all the government and technical facilities in the state - have made to the nation and the world. The contrast from "no tech" to "high tech" in the state is remarkable if you step back and view the state's diversity among its people and traditions. And whether or not one agrees with the nature of the scientific and technical work conducted in the state, its significance is indisputable. Nuevo M?xico is a worthwhile read if you're not from New Mexico but you seek to understand the many reasons why New Mexico and its people are unique. Better yet, it's a wonderful resource for New Mexicans to understand what has made their home what it is today and how certain influences can determine its future. For many Hispanic New Mexicans, it is die first time we have seen ourselves described and pictured contextually in a scholarly work of history. In an exciting way, Nuevo M?xico does not merely Cheap Christian Louboutin Flats tell history; it tells our story. Nuevo M?xico is a good template for Latinos in any area of the country reflecting on their origins, traditions and culture and writing their own history.
