UPS batteries commonly refers to systems containing batteries, where the entire device is referred to as an Uninterruptible Power Supply. These devices provide instant power for computers, medical equipment, and other electronics which would be adversely affected by the short period of time between normal power failing and emergency power coming on-line. Fancier models also 'smooth' out variations in voltage from the main power source. There are several kinds of these devices, each with their own name and method of functioning. Offline or standby models have the battery connected to the power outlet at all times, and the electronic device also connected to the power outlet. When the voltage falls below a certain level, a switch flips and the electronic device becomes connected to the battery instead of the wall socket. This is the simplest model. Line-interactive models are slightly more complex. They involve coils that can allow small amounts of voltage to flow through them, and thus can correct for slight variations in voltage. They work similarly to the offline/standby models, but instead of being all or nothing, they can help smooth out changes in voltage, as well. Double-conversion or online models are slightly fancier versions of line-interactive devices. However, unlike line-interactive devices, which only come into play if the voltage from the main power supply becomes unstable, online models 'filter' the voltage from the main power supply at all times. This is ideal for very sensitive equipment, which might be damaged by minor fluctuations in voltage. Larger models that are powered by flywheels or diesel generators can be purchased for industrial use. Most UPS batteries are connected to sensitive electronic devices, and some medical equipment. These items might be damaged by losing power even for the short interval between power failure and emergency power kicking in, or the people attached to them might be adversely affected.
