If you want to repair sun damaged skin, there are a few simple steps you need to take. First, you need to protect the area from additional damage.

UV rays of sunlight cause increased production and activity of free radical molecules. It is actually the free radicals that do the damage. Exposure to toxins like cigarette smoke will cause even more damage.

The symptoms of sun-damage include dryness, roughness, uneven pigmentation and wrinkles. A good moisturizer will help correct the first two symptoms. If it contains the right ingredients, a moisturizer can fix the other symptoms, too.

According to dermatologists, it is possible to de-age your skin’s appearance simply by avoiding the sun’s rays for six months. They say you can take several years off of your appearance by doing that.

Because of the dermatologist recommendation and because of the risk of skin cancer, sunscreen has become a popular ingredient for cosmetics of all kinds. It should not be included in your daily or nightly moisturizer.

For one thing, it becomes ineffective if it is not reapplied on a regular basis. For another, minor sunscreens cannot prevent damage and some of them cause free radical damage when exposed to sunlight. So, they will not help you repair sun damaged skin and they could do more harm than good.

The FDA and other organizations have said that the best way to protect against UV exposure is to stay in the shade and wear protective clothing. If you are fair-skinned and you cannot avoid being in the sunlight for an extended period of time, use zinc oxide. It is the safest and most effective sunscreen ingredient on the market. Some people don’t like it, because it is white in appearance, but it is still your best choice.

Once you limit your exposure, your body can start repairing the damage. It just needs the right tools. The right tools to repair sun damaged skin are antioxidants. You can increase your intake of antioxidants by eating more fruits and vegetables or taking supplements. You can also use antioxidant-rich creams.

Be careful when you are comparing the antioxidant creams on the market. Some companies claim that their creams are antioxidant-rich, but if you read the label of ingredients,

you see that the only antioxidants they contain are artificial preservatives. Artificial preservatives will not help repair sun damaged skin and they could be bad for your health.
