A fingertip pulse oximeter is simple in nature, has a portable all-in-one monitor of oxygenation, and has pulse rate and rhythm regularity that is suitable for field use. It is a safe, non-invasive monitor of the cardio-respiratory status of high-dependency patients during general and regional anaesthesia especially in the emergency department. This includes techniques such as endoscopy, where often frail patients are given sedative drugs. Oximeters detect the presence of cyanosis more reliably than with best doctors particularly when using their clinical judgment. When patients are ready to be transported, especially when noisy, like in aircraft, ambulances or helicopters, the audible tone and alarms may not be heard. But if a waveform can be seen composed with acceptable oxygen saturation, this gives a global indication of a patient's cardio-respiratory status. To assess the capability of limbs after a plastic and orthopedic surgery, the oximeter then will require a pulsatile signal under the sensor. It can distinguish whether a limb is getting a blood supply. Pulse oximeter is also one of the means to reduce the frequency of blood gas analysis in intensive care patients. This is usually occurring in pediatric practice where vascular access may be more difficult. To bound oxygen toxicity in premature neonates, oxygen can be tapered to maintain an oxygen saturation of 90%. This would certainly avoid the damage to the lungs and retinas of neonates. While in fetal oximetry, a developing technique that uses reflectance oximetry, the probe is placed over the temple or cheek of the fetus that needs to be sterile and sterilized. Due to physiological and technical reasons, they are difficult to secure and the readings are variable.
