Once upon a time, string lights were used only at Christmas to trim the tree or brighten up the exterior of the house. Now, however, new colors and designs, as well as safety improvements, have made it possible to decorate with them year-round. Outdoors, consider using a solid-color to outline a deck or railing to call attention to the architectural detail. It's also possible to find novelty varieties in shapes that reflect your interests, such as palm trees or tropical fish, that will personalize your space. And wrapping a string of tiny glittering bulbs around a plant or two can turn your garden into a brilliant oasis. Indoors, string lights contribute ambiance to just about any space. Living rooms and bedrooms are the most logical places for some whimsical spot illumination - a little glimmer for when overheads are turned down low. But with the invention of LED's that are battery-operated, you can even place them in the bathroom or kitchen without having to worry about using electrical plugs around water. If you're not sure that the traditional strands of bulbs are polished enough for your decor, you can try ropes versions for a more sophisticated look. Ropes are especially nice when used to surround artwork or highlight crown molding. It's worth mentioning that string lights are a particularly wonderful way to add character to a child's room. Sports-themed types, like those featuring miniature baseballs and mitts or footballs, are an excellent substitute for a traditional nightlight in a boy's space. For girls, there are fairies or flowers to lend a fantastical feminine touch. These days, there are attractive sets for holidays beyond Christmas. For example, for Halloween, you can buy strands of Jack O'Lanterns, gravestones, or skulls to cast your space in a spooky glow, and for Easter, white bunnies and pastel eggs announce the arrival of spring. Finally, these lights are an increasingly popular way to play up a party theme. Strands of treasure chests, Jolly Roger flags, and swashbuckling swords liven up pirate bashes. Ten-gallon hats and cowboy boots reinforce a Western atmosphere. And strands depicting colorful glasses festooned with umbrellas or simple beer bottles are great choices for cocktail parties and backyard barbecues.
