People who attend church every week usually do so for spiritual reasons, but recent research shows that there may be even more incentive. Studies have shown that people who attend church regularly tend to live longer. The reason for this is unknown, but there are several working theories. Many churches promote healthier living through less risky behaviors. Most churches teach their members to avoid harmful drugs. They also teach to either abstain from, or avoid consuming too much alcohol. Avoiding promiscuity is another teaching that results in better health. People who attend church every week are likely to follow these teachings, and live the healthier lifestyle that results. There is also the notion that spirituality provides relief from depression and anxiety. A person's mental outlook can very much influence their physical functioning, so especially in old age, depression can be lethal. Anxiety increases the risk for heart problems, the most common cause of death in the United States. Another logical theory is that churches provide a social network. When somebody in that network becomes sick or injured, the other members in the network will care for them. Having that kind of support can make the difference between health and sickness. I doubt many people are going to begin attending church for the life-extending qualities alone, but it is interesting that the spiritual benefits are complimented by health benefits as well. Whether it is the avoidance of harmful situations, the psychological benefits of spirituality, the social benefits of belonging, or simply spiritual spill-over, it is a phenomenon nonetheless.
