This coastal area with its pristine beaches and secluded coves is backed by the outstanding Pyrenees Mountains. The well known cosmopolitan city of Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. Barcelona has become famous for its exuberant nightlife, outstanding architecture, chic boutiques and the world class cuisine of Catalonia. When in Barcelona visit the old section of Las Ramblas or the Gothic Quarter as this area of winding medieval streets offers the opportunity to do a little exploring. While you are in the old section don't be surprised to see street performers, artists and vendors. The Costa Brava stretches for some 160 kilometres covering the regions of L'Alt Emporda, Baix Emporda, La Selva and Girones, all of which are in the northern region. If you travel along the coast you will come across traditional Spanish fishing villages, secluded coves and medieval towns including some with ancient castles. With the mountainous background and white sandy beaches you couldn't ask for a more picturesque location. When you add this to the endless days of sunshine and an excellent year round temperature you will now understand what draws people to this area. There are some twenty villages in the Costa Dorado area along with white sandy beaches that are gently lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. Between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea you will find tranquil small Spanish villages often surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, hazelnut trees and almond trees. When visiting the area you will notice that most of the villages are built on top of a hill. This gave the villagers a better defensive position to shoot down on the intruders or pour hot oil on them. The seaside tourist resorts have developed over time with the family in mind, more so than any other place in Spain. These cities include Sitges, Tarragona and Delta del Ebro that have the children's activities on offer. The best way to get your bearings is to take the cable car ride across the Port Vell giving you an overall view if the area. After you have finished your cable ride venture over to the magnificent Barcelona Cathedral with its distinctive octagonal bell towers and in the same area is the Royal Palace and the Picasso Museum. While you are out and about take the time to explore the excellent zoo along with the largest aquarium in all of Europe. If you are up for a little history stop by the Monastery of Santus Creus: after which you may need a wee tipple and you can have one in the Penedes wine country. If you still haven't had enough history the Monastery of Montserrat that is home to the Benedictine Monks and the famous Black Virgin of Montserrat is a good place to spend the entire day exploring. There is just too much to see and do in this area: one holiday is not enough so you will need to schedule another one.
