A tarpaulin, or tarp for short, has many uses. Tarpaulins come in many sizes for different applications. They are made from material that is waterproof, strong and flexible. Some are made with canvas, polyethylene, polyester with a urethane coating or woven polypropylene. They normally have grommets along the sides and corners to attach ropes or tie downs to keep it in place. The main use of a tarp is to cover something to shelter it from the elements. A tarpaulin is often used to cover items so that damage does not occur from rain, wind, snow or sunlight. They offer protection when delivering furniture and other products on the open bed of a truck. The sheeting is tied down using a rope attached to the grommets and the bed of the truck. It keeps items from getting blown away during travel, and it also keeps the items from getting wet or covered with dust. The least expensive tarp is made from lightweight blue polyethylene mesh that is treated with a coating of polyethylene. This material is not as durable as tarps made with stronger material. They offer adequate protection for floors during painting, and they also keep paint from splattering on furniture. There are other uses as well when you only need short-term protection. You can also use a heavy-duty poly cover when you need a little stronger material. Canvas is one of the oldest types of material used for tarpaulins. To make it resistant to mildew, mold and water, it undergoes a chemical treatment. It is often used outdoors at construction sites. It is more durable than poly, and much heavier. Tarps made from vinyl or PVC material are stronger than poly or canvas and also more expensive. This material is used by truckers, since they do not tear as easily as the other materials. There are clear vinyl tarps to help see what is covered underneath. A tarpaulin made from mesh is slightly different from the other tarps. They can be purchased with a tight weave or a loose weave. Some mesh tarpaulins come with a vinyl coating. They make good wind screens and protection for trees and bushes to keep birds from destroying the fruit. When you need to protect something from paint, climate, birds or the sun get a tarpaulin that is made for the situation. If you camp out a lot, you probably already know the value of having a tarp around.
