Some people love yachts, some people love jet-skis, and some people love dinghies. Every type of watercraft requires care and attention, and dinghies are no different. It’s important to check that your dinghy is “ship shape” before you put it in the water. Not caring for your craft correctly can cause issues with boat insurance, and can also sap some of the joy out sailing. Here are some of the most important things to be aware of when you’re getting ready for the new sailing season. You should always look after your rigging. Check pulleys, hooks, shackles, blocks and cleats for signs of corrosion and wear. Pay equal attention to lines and wires, and replace anything that’s starting to fray. It’s a good idea to let your rigging dry before packing it away, and it’s also a good idea to invest in some lubricants to keep contact points free from grit. Are your sails in good condition? Be very aware of any nicks, splits or tears. Get handy with the patching if needs be. And it’s always worth remembering that spinnakers are particularly prone to tears – because they’re thin. A little hole can quickly become a big problem if you don’t deal with it. Obviously, you don’t want to neglect your dinghy’s hull. It needs to be watertight, and you need to keep an eye on any dramatic dents, cracks, etc. Check your rudder as well. Your trailer is important as well. Keep the bearings well lubed, and always have a spare tyre that’s in road-safe condition. And if you use your trailer to launch your dinghy, remember that immersing something in water (especially salt water) can lead to corrosion. This isn’t a comprehensive list, but it gives you some important pointers to consider when you’re getting your dinghy ready. Of course the most important thing is to remember to have fun! And, of course, don’t forget to renew that boat insurance.
