When I was younger, I used to help my grandmother cut her toenails. While it might not be pleasant to talk about, the toenails had grown massive and thick, and with the arthritis in her hands, she did not have the stamina to cut all the way through them. Her toenail clipper was also a bit too small to handle the job, so I used to cut grooves into her toenails and then slide the clippers along, cutting away until the nails were nice and clean. I was only a child and knew nothing about podiatry, but I was looking at some information on a whim and discovered that my grandmother would have really benefited from a visit to a good foot clinic. The thickness of her nails was probably due to a combination of aging and a fungal infection. Had a trained podiatrist had the chance to treat her, the nails might have improved, and they would not have been left splintered and jagged, which was the result of my efforts. They probably would have been able to cosmetically reshape and file the toenails as well, leaving them looking and feeling more like they did when she was younger. She has been gone new for several years, but because of my experience with her, I have an idea what to look for should the same thing start happening to my feet. Rather than have a grandchild hack away at my toes, I will have them looked at by a trained podiatrist. The Foot Clinic is a podiatrist Toronto trained Foot Specialist.
