When I was younger, my father used to always take me to the barber with him to get haircuts. It was a cool thing to do, sitting with the other men, listening to the things that they were talking about while waiting for my turn in the chair. I always seemed to get the same hair cut, regardless of what I told the barber I wanted him to do. It was no big deal though, because it was all I knew. One day, when I was about ten years old, that all changed. I was out shopping with my mother and needed a hair cut, and so she took me to her hair salon in Chelsea, NYC. At first, I was kind of nervous because it was totally different from the barber shop. When I got in the chair, the first thing they did was wash my hair, and that more or less won me over. It felt so good I almost passed out. Once that was done, the stylist asked me how I wanted me hair done, and to my utter surprise, she did it exactly the way I wanted. She did make recommendations and told me that some of my ideas were not in my best interests, but for the first time, I felt like someone was listening to me about how I wanted my hair done. I have gone to salons ever since, and while I sometimes miss the banter at the barber shop, the trade off in hair that looks great is well worth the sacrifice.
