A small amount of cholesterol is needed in the physiological processes. It is good to know that once the level of cholesterol is higher than normal something is wrong and risks may occur. Cholesterol is a substance produced by the liver. It surely helps in body activity because it leads to the production of vitamin D and hormones testosterone and estrogen. Cholesterol is also used in producing bile which is a substance used in digesting fats. More than that, it is good to know that cholesterol covers the exterior membrane of blood cells and protects them from damage. As we said before, normal amounts of cholesterol are benefic but high amounts can lead to severe complications from cardio-vascular diseases to heart failure. It is known that cholesterol is not soluble in blood and that is why it deposits in different areas of the body such as arteries, soft tissues or organs. In these situations cholesterol will obstruct the normal blood flow and prevents the oxygenation of the body organs. Cholesterol is associated with age, gender and other internal dysfunctions. Cholesterol is also related to diets. An inappropriate diet is believed to have a great contribution in the high levels of cholesterol. That is why a low cholesterol diet is recommended for improving the cholesterol levels in the body and also to improve your weight. We know two types of fat, saturated and unsaturated. Unsaturated fat helps in reducing the blood cholesterol levels, while saturated fat contributes to the accumulation of cholesterol inside the organism. Speaking about diets we should say that a low cholesterol diet should not contain foods that are rich in saturated fat. Carbohydrates should also be avoided. For those with high levels of cholesterol we say that animal products should be restricted. Fatty and organ meats as well as diary products should be excluded from a low cholesterol diet. These mentioned animal products not only contain a lot of cholesterol but they are also rich in saturated fat. The specialist’s recommendation is fish instead of fatty meats. The diet that we are talking about should contain plenty of vegetables and fruits too. These are recommended because they do not contain fat and because they are rich in vitamins and minerals. Among the recommended fruits and vegetables we have to remember soy, carrots, cabbage, beans, dried peas, potatoes, apples, pears, oranges, nectarines or lemons. Another advice is to cook your own meals. This way you can avoid fried meals and you might consider grilling or boiling your food. Plenty of water drinking will also help in elimination of the cholesterol.
