It is well known that nowadays the bird flu virus represents a general problem that might affect us all. Scientists are expected to come with new strategies in order to stop the spread of this deadly strain avian flu which was declared a national emergency among south European states and Asiatic countries. It is expected from scientists to come with solutions and adopt different measures, not as drastic the ones taken until now. It is willing not to lock up the free-range poultry but to increase surveillance of migratory birds and the farmers’ vigilance as well. Until know we have not obtained any satisfying answer for the possibility of controlling the H5N1 virus. It is known that this virus claimed 57 human lives. The virus spreads fast and it is known that he occurred in South-East Asia, he traveled through Europe and now it is detected on Europe’s doorstep in Siberia. The specialists agreed that the virus was spread with the help of the migratory birds which have certainly passed the Ural Mountains and traveled through Europe. Specialists also agree that is a desperate need for a co-ordinate strategy in order to prevent the potential repeat of the 1918 flu pandemic which killed 40 million persons, more than the First World War did. When bird flu was first noticed the specialists considered it a threat but nowadays they agree that bird flu is an international emergency. They believe that this virus threatens people all over the globe and there is a risk for pandemics which can even decimate a country. The two main measures that have to be taken are identified as vaccines and more effective surveillance measures that have to be able to give warnings about the virus at the first opportunity. Different opinions are said about the disasters that may be cause by the spreading of the H5N1 virus. Some say that this problem is the most severe one for the public health officials that believe the virus is not only a disaster among humans but also an economic problem. This virus that leads to bird flu was first detected in Hong Kong in 1997. Cases have been seen since them in Vietnam and Thailand in 2004. The virus is spread by the wild birds that are usually not affected while for domestic poultry could mean death. This virus can be transmitted to humans too. Until know the virus has infected only the humans that got in direct contact with the infected birds. The greatest fear is that the virus could mutate and them it can pass easily from person to person leading to a global pandemic.
