Getting In Shape After Your Tummy Tuck

Health
An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a surgical procedure, which requires quite a bit of recovery time in order for your body to fully recuperate. As the procedure works to remove excess fat and skin while tightening the abdominal muscles, many patients find themselves excited and anxious to get started on their new workout regimen. However, it’s important to note that getting back to the gym too early can have adverse effects to your recovery, ultimately damaging the end results once you have fully recovered, 2 – 3 months after the surgery. After you have been cleared to begin exercising, it’s important not to go overboard, rather taking the time to listen to your body in order to gauge your current limitations. In this article, we will offer a few helpful tips to get you back up and running.

Step 1 – After you’ve been cleared to begin exercising (generally three weeks post surgery), you can begin light walking. Be sure to wear your compression garments in order to prevent any excess fluid buildup. Keep a heart rate monitor handy, and pay attention to ensure you do not exceed 135.

Step 2 – Over time, you can gradually increase the length of your little outings and you can allow your heart rate to increase to 140. If you initially began at 20 minute walks, up it to 30 the second week. Once again, be sure to keep your compression garments on throughout.

Step 3 – The next week, take your exercise regimen to the next level, perhaps incorporating the use of an elliptical machine to work up your endurance levels. Do not let your heart rate exceed 145 until you reach the 6 week mark.

Step 4 – Once you’ve hit 6 weeks, you can resume your regular exercise routine, sans a couple of exceptions. Avoid excessive workouts such as jump-training and intense sprinting, which can cause damage to the skin that is still working to heal itself. While your heart rate can be allowed to increase, it is still important to keep your compression garments on, even in cases where you have ceased wearing them otherwise.

Step 5 – Two weeks later, you should be able to start returning to high impact routines such as aerobics and running. Light weight training should also be acceptable to your body so long as you avoid work on your core. These muscles must be allowed time to heal, and if not provided the proper amount of time to do so, can be damaged.

Step 6 – Three months past your surgical date, you should be clear to partake in all exercise activities, including those that focus on your abdomen area. At this point, it is up to you whether you should wear compression garments, as some patients will experience swelling six months into recovery. The important thing is not to over extend yourself, and treat your recovery with the care and attention it deserves. Keep in mind the results you were initially looking for when you decided to move forward with the procedure and realize that while you’re on the right road, that it will still take some time to get where you want to be.
