About The story of the Billing Boats company started in the 1950s Mr. Ejnar (Ed) Billing proudly displayed his build up model fishing boat in the window of his wifes model shop in Denmark. During this time period, model boat kits were quite literally unheard of, but this would soon change when a Danish magazine became interested in buying a bulk of the models for competition giveaways. The problem faced by Mr. Billing was going to be keeping up with the amount of demand the magazine produced. Thus, the idea of the model boat kit was born, instead of building complete models Mr. Billing produce kits that could then be built up in the exact way a real ship would be constructed. This method of model ship building became known as ‘plank on frame’ and has now come to be used by all model ship manufacturers around the world. Billing Boats as a company came to fruition in 1958 and soon came to be known throughout the world as the very first model boat kit manufacturer. Mr. Billing died in the 1990s and his wife and son took over the company with the intention of modernizing to compete with the new competition from all over the world. August 2008 marked the 50th Anniversary of Billing Boats, and I’m personally sure there will be many more to come. Brand Review So the big questions to the model boat builders today go something along the lines of value for money above the competition? The answer, in my opinion is there is not quite the value for money in Billing Boats compared to some other brands but this difference is negligible. Considering you’re buying into a quality brand with a great deal of history and know how you can’t go wrong. The question could therefore be argued, how much quality and value is passed on to the product given the companies heritage? Where to Buy? Most model shop will have some representation of the billing boat range but in order to view their entire offering I would recommend turning to the internet.
