Going on fishing trips is usually all about escaping into the outdoors and a being a part of a pleasurable pastime. A lot of anglers simply enjoy catching for fun. Although, if you and your friends are going to get up at the crack of dawn, pay for a license and the necessary equipment, then you may as well try to invest the time spent in catching a potential meal. Read over the following for a step-by-step guide on how to efficiently clean your fish.

The tools you will need to properly fillet after your fishing trips are as follows: a knife, a flat cutting surface, and a sharpening tool. An electric knife can be used if you are careful, but they can slip and end up cutting through the backbone, thus spreading bits of bone throughout the fillet. Also, electric knives are more of a hassle to clean.

After deciding you want to keep your catch, go ahead and ice it down overnight. Not only to preserve the meat, but icing overnight will ensure a better flavor if you do not plan to cook the fish right away.

The first cut you will need to make is to make an incision across the belly. Lay the body flat and cut from under the jaw all the way to the anal fin. This will help to guide the other cuts later on. Make sure the tip of the blade is nice and sharp for this stage.

Now, cut across the body from just behind the head to all the way to the tail. Be sure not to cut through the backbone and curve the blade upwards once you start to cut into it. This step requires that you slice through the rib bones, so sharpen your knife beforehand if it is dull.

Next you will want to cut the skin off of the meat. You can leave this part on, but you will have to deal with cutting it apart later on when you eat. To do this, fold the still attached fillet outwards and lay it flat. Start your cut from the tail skin and cut the thing layer across.

Some people like to leave the rib bones in their fillets, but why bother having to pick them out when you should be enjoying your meal? These bones should be visible and easy to cut out. After this step, you may want to place your cuts in plastic bags in you plan on freezing them. Meat should only be stored frozen for a few months, maximum.

Cleaning is simple and easy. After going on a long haul with your buddies, there really is nothing better than cooking the day’s catch. Following the above mentioned steps will help you to prepare the most enjoyable meal. Not having to deal with skin and bones makes for a better eating experience. If fishing trips are one of your favorite things to do, then get the most out of them by enjoying what you haul in.
