When you want to use something a little bit different to normal that is very cheap, why not make your own highly effective fishing baits tailored to your very own desires and requirements? Very potent and complex baits can be made instantly on the bank. Read on to find out how easy and cheap and effective it can be to catch cheap big fish on unusual and alternative homemade baits! When you think of carp and catfish baits, most anglers think of pellets and boilies, perhaps particles like sweetcorn, maize and hemp, and live baits like worms, leeches or maggots, and perhaps baits such as luncheon meat. But what is missing here are baits you can make from ingredients found in the average larder, pet food store, farm suppliers or aquatics centre. Probably the most over-looked method of making very complex but simple baits made at home with the very minimum number of ingredients, is making unique boosted bread based pastes! Bread is just about the most underrated and least fully exploited bait ingredient as you will see! Most anglers know bread has natural properties that make it highly attractive and has it been an outstanding fishing bait for literally centuries. You might not even associate bread with modern carp or catfish fishing nor appreciate how useful and effective bread is until you read on a little bit further! The major point about bread in this instance is that it is an excellent binder for other ingredients, extracts and liquids, that can instantly be mixed together at any time, even on the bank in a matter of minutes. Bread is very useful too because it can be shaped in any way you want and be made any texture, consistency, colour, hardness, flavour, smell, taste or whatever you like. Bread can be used to bind some of the most effective modern carp and catfish stimulators and attractors and liquids known today which is why I find it exceptionally effective. Commercial boilies and pellets are pretty standard baits in many ways and fish such as carp, catfish, barbel and chub can soon learn to avoid such baits by repetition of being hooked on such baits and new unusual baits are a great edge. This is even more of a point when you can make up new versions of baits as you fish through the day or night and keep using different baits instead of plugging away with just one bait that the fish may be less confident of feeding on for any of a variety of reasons. There is the point too that many fish do not actually require what many baits are made from simply because they have eaten so much of it previously due to other anglers over-feeding swims and so on. In many cases you cannot tell if the swim you fish when arriving at a water has been over fed on what kinds of baits anyway. One thing is for certain about bread and that is it releases attraction and stimulation into the water column fast and gets to work immediately for you. I noticed this effect in my days as a general float and ledger coarse angler fishing for bites and anything that swam during my fishing apprenticeship in the Seventies. Basically what happened was, I noticed that adding extra liquids and ingredients to my bread crumb based ground baits improved fish feeding responses and catch rates and also raised the number of bigger fish hooked significantly and lead to my becoming predominantly a carp angler out for bigger and bigger fish and after huge catfish too. Do not look down on bread; it is used in modern carp angling ground baits including stick mixes and method mixes etc of all kinds and is used in many cheap readymade baits. However, readymade ground baits are often quite pricy and maybe not quite what you are looking for to use to be different from the crowd. Most of the time you simply do not know what readymade baits actually contain so how can you determine what effects such bait may (or may not have) in terms of fish responses?! In my opinion in terms of fishing baits, ignorance is not bliss but a grave disadvantage because you have simply given your power away to others. The reason I am so into baits is because you can choose how you want your baits to effect fish in ways you know are unusual or even more exciting than the average readymade bait. You can also make your baits perform batter because conventional baits are often standard shapes, sizes, textures and formats that fish get used to dealing successfully with and so avoid getting hooked on them much of the time! Cheap readymade boilies may sometimes contain bread, but I really wonder how many anglers who have used these actually knew this as the vast majority of most of the very most basic carp boilies consist of little more than cheap hard course wheat flour in the form of semolina, and soya flour plus flavour and maybe an enhancer such as a concentrated sweetener. In case you had not realised it , most bread in the Western world are made using wheat flour and most boilies and pellets contain wheat or some sort so draw your own conclusions – it works! Wheat containing or bread containing baits have caught carp over 60 pounds and many huge catfish have been hooked on stimulation-boosted bread based baits too! So how do you make a bread based bait that is instant and tailored towards carp, or catfish or barbel or chub for instance? One of the easiest methods is simply to mould the fresh flake in a new loaf into balls. These are packed with salts, sugar, oils, yeast plus perhaps whole grains and other ingredients found in the diversity of bread made today. To add extra appeal, you might simply spread some peanut butter onto the bread, or spread yeast extract, or creamed Tahini for instance (or all of these examples,) and mould each slice into a dough or paste but things can get far more complex. If you want to harness the power of modern ingredients then you really can do almost anything with bread as a carrier for extremely potent substances. In terms of instant baits, you can mix up some eggs with you flavours or condiments or whatever liquid extracts etc, and simply add bread crumbs, or spread the liquid mixture onto bread slices and mould it all together. If you want harder baits you can add semolina to the mix or blood powder, and if you want more resilient more nutritionally stimulating baits then try adding wheat gluten, maize meal and sodium caseinate perhaps. In terms of attracting carp or catfish or other species, what really matters is the soluble portion of the bait. This means you can instantly mix up baits on the bank and ring the changes and maker baits with the minimum of time, effort or fuss and least cost or waste to greatest instant effect. In reality you can see immediately if your new baits are winners as such baits tend to perform best when immersed in water less than 4 to 8 hours as they are so good at releasing their attraction – which is the whole point of bait in getting hooks in mouths as soon as possible right?! If you want a different bait for carp, barbel or catfish or chub, then try this simple idea: Either buy breadcrumbs (which can be costly) or get the old bread for free or for nearly nothing from your local supermarket or bakery. I have always done this because to me it is simple economic sense and the fish never seem to mind old bread! Older bread is good because when you air it becomes more crumbly and it is quick and easy enough to slice off the crust and simply crumble the flake into fine crumbs very quickly in seconds. I have often worked with 5 or 10 loaves at a time so I can make a generous amount of cheap bait very fast in a batch. I will often add an extra 2 teaspoons of fine sea salt to the crumbs per loaf plus any of a range of sweet substances, from icing sugar and honey to granulated sugar and raw molasses among many others. One of the things I like to add is fine seaweed or kelp powder as this really packs a punch nutritionally and is very stimulating. If you want a very different bait for carp then making a bread bait packed with fine seaweed powder and enhanced with liquid kelp is certainly one example. I might add spirulina powder too, liquid fish protein, hot chilli powder and Robin Red, CC Moore Feedstim powder and liquid and voila – here is a really good winter bait that is highly soluble and works great in the lowest water temperatures. Notably, bread based baits like this make for excellent ground baits that can be made for many purposes and have a range of different actions in water. You can make you bread baits more resilient to by adding liquid eggs instead of liquids foods and flavours etc, but my recommendation especially for winter and cold early spring conditions is to use whole egg powder or egg protein powder instead as this has proven more beneficial in many ways. For catfish you might simply mould fresh bread with fish meal or tinned fish or mashed canned sea foods. Probably the most instantly made all round baits is bread molded with grated fermented shrimp block – another little secret tip of mine I have used for years with lots of success with big fish (try this with enzyme treated yeast powder and blue cheese powder from CC Moore in winter plus essential oils!) You might simply mould bread with liquid mussel extract and liquid Belachan plus some ground CLO or Red Band bird food plus some mixed spices. You might use ground pellets and meat powders, maybe some enzyme-treated liver powder, yeast extract and essential oils perhaps. Making homemade winter baits is very exciting because baits that are really successful in winter are normally extremely effective all year round! Moulding boosted bread pastes around your baits, rigs etc and using them as free baits and ground baits really works at such little cost compared to using so many conventional baits that it amazes me anglers do not think of it, but then so many anglers simply copy others they will always miss out on so much good stuff! If you want to make boilies from bread it is very easy to use liquid egg, egg albumin, whole egg powder, egg protein powder, why gel or other binders, gels, blood powder, gluten etc – but why go for more expensive options when whole egg powder and wheat gluten are so cheap and you can boost you baits with CSL powder or the legendary Feedstim powder and liquid from CC Moore?! Ultimately the number of ideas that spring to mind in regards to the possibilities you can achieve by using very cheap (or even free bread) as your main bulk bait binder and carrier ingredient are tremendous - as is the ability to make your own unique baits then and then on the bank with the ability to see instant results! So experiment at absolutely minimal risk in money, time or effort and make very cheap bread bait for yourself; I assure you that doing it will pay you back big-time!
